Coming into the weekend the drivers were repeatedly asked whether they would go for it or play safe in the inaugural F1 Sprint, what with grid positions for Sunday's British Grand Prix at stake. Within seconds of the start we got Fernando Alonso's answer...

    From 11th on the grid the Spanish two-time world champion's perfect blend of aggression, opportunism and soft tyres had him flying up the order - and by the end of a very busy first lap he had climbed six - yes SIX! - places from P11 to P5.
