F3: Doohan victory in Sochi season finale helps seal teams’ title for Trident

The Formula 3 season came to a dramatic conclusion at Sochi, as Red Bull junior Jack Doohan sealed the teams’ title for Trident with a third win of the season, coming out on top of an intense battle with team mate Clement Novalak, who ended up third behind Mercedes junior Frederik Vesti.

Doohan was told by his engineer to avoid a fight with his team mate, as Trident looked to wrap up the title, but the drivers’ vice-champion ignored the instructions and fought off the Frenchman’s advances, the pair surviving two hairy moments.

Vesti had watched on as the pair scrapped and made the most of Novalak’s heavily worn tyres to steal second with two laps to go.

After taking the title in Race 1, Red Bull junior Dennis Hauger was unable to help his PREMA team clinch the teams’ championship as well, as he was taken out of contention by Oliver Rasmussen midway through and dumped to the back of the field. His team mates Arthur Leclerc and Olli Caldwell fought their way to seventh and 10th, having started in 14th and 15th, but it wasn’t enough for the reigning champions to retain their crown for a third successive season.

Logan Sargeant climbed from 11th to fourth to secure fifth in the teams’ standings for Charouz Racing System, the Czech side’s highest placing at this level.

Hitech Grand Prix’s Jak Crawford completed the top five on track for his best result on a Sunday. Johnathan Hoggard finished in sixth, with Alpine junior Victor Martins eighth, ahead of Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa in P9.
