HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from a brilliant British Grand Prix, as Sainz seals maiden Grand Prix victory
Carlos Sainz sealed his maiden victory in Formula 1 in a breath-taking British Grand Prix, overtaking team mate Charles Leclerc to seal a sensational victory at Silverstone.
After starting on pole, Sainz pitted from second place for the soft tyre under the Safety Car – brought about by Esteban Ocon stopping on track. He was then able to overtake Leclerc, before going on to win the Grand Prix, on his 150th race start in Formula 1.
Leclerc could not hold on to second place, and was eventually overtaken by Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton, who finished in second and third respectively. Behind Leclerc, in fourth, was the Alpine of Fernando Alonso, in P5, ahead of Lando Norris in sixth. Max Verstappen had to make do with damage to his floor, finishing in seventh.
It was a first top-10 finish in Formula 1 for Mick Schumacher, as he came home in eighth, ahead of the Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel in ninth, with Schumacher’s Haas team mate Kevin Magnussen rounding out the top 10.
The race was earlier red flagged after a major crash involving Zhou Guanyu, George Russell, Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Sebastian Vettel, Yuki Tsunoda and Ocon. Zhou, Russell and Albon had to be checked over in the medical centre, the former two declared fit as a conscious Albon was flown to hospital for further checks.
