Max Verstappen led the way in the second practice session at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, topping the timesheets ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz – who crashed out towards the end of FP2.

Late in his qualifying simulation runs, Verstappen set a time of 1m 12.462s on the soft tyre, to lead home favourite, Leclerc, in second, by just 0.065s, followed by FP1 timesheet topper, Sainz, in third.

Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest for Aston Martin, ahead of Lando Norris, in the McLaren and the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton in sixth. Last year’s winner in Monte Carlo, Sergio Perez, was seventh fastest, ahead of the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas in eighth.

Sainz brought out the lone red flags in the session, after crashing into the barrier at Turn 15, while Yuki Tsunoda also hit the barrier at Turn 13, suffering a puncture on his left rear tyre.
