Carlos Sainz was the fastest driver on day one of running at the French Grand Prix, with the Spaniard topping the timesheets to lead a Ferrari one-two in the second practice session at Paul Ricard.

On older soft tyres, Sainz set a time of 1m 32.527s to lead team mate Charles Leclerc by 0.101s. Max Verstappen finished in third, but he was 0.550s behind Sainz, with the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton rounding out the top five.

It was a good session for McLaren, with Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo in sixth and ninth respectively, while Pierre Gasly continued his fine start to his home Grand Prix weekend by finishing in seventh. However, it was a slow afternoon for Sergio Perez, as his best time was only good enough for 10th.

FP2: Sainz leads Ferrari team mate Leclerc by 0.1s in second French GP practice session

FP2 produced no red flags, although we did see a number of drivers run wide – while Mick Schumacher spun off at Turn 11, the Haas driver fortunately avoiding contact with the barriers.
