Jos Verstappen on how his F1 career helped shape son Max's

Everyone remembers the fanfare and hype that surrounded Max Verstappen’s arrival in F1, but some may be unaware that his father, Jos, created a similar buzz back in 1993. Like Max, Jos enjoyed the same meteoric rise through the junior formulas as his son, and had nearly every team on the grid vying for his signature after a hugely impressive debut test with Footwork at Estoril.
The Dutchman – this week’s guest on F1’s official podcast, Beyond The Grid, supported by Bose - would end up signing for Benetton, and made his F1 debut alongside none other than eventual champion Michael Schumacher the following year. He’d go on make more than 100 Grand Prix starts and score two podims – although it’s fair to say his was something of a rollercoaster career, and by the time it was over he’d switched his attention to nurturing son Max’s prodigious talents.
These days, Jos is still never far from Max’s side, and host Tom Clarkson caught up with him at the recent Belgian Grand Prix to speak about the highs and lows of a life in motorsport and how what he learned along the way was vital for helping his son get ahead...
