There was plenty of drama in FP2 for the Portuguese Grand Prix as the session was halted by two red flags – the second coming after Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen crashed spectacularly at Turn 1.

There had already been one stoppage when Pierre Gasly's AlphaTauri caught fire while out on the circuit. Once the session was restarted, Stroll and Verstappen were back out and trying to make up for lost time when they hit each other.

Stroll was ahead and on the left hand side of the track in his Racing Point when he turned in at the high-speed corner, apparently unaware that Verstappen was attempting to pass him on the inside in the Red Bull, having inched ever closer using DRS.

Cue a shower of sparks, profanity and carbon fibre as Stroll's car was punted into the gravel and the red flag was flown for a lengthy clean-up, while Verstappen limped his Red Bull back to the pits.

Both drivers walked away unharmed but there is bound to be plenty of fallout, with both Verstappen and Stroll called to the stewards after FP2 to explain themselves.

Watch how it happened in the video above and stay tuned to F1.com for more coverage of the first-ever Grand Prix at Portimao, and the first Portuguese Grand Prix since 1996.
