Charles Leclerc was chasing down Sergio Perez for P2 at the tail-end of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix when he took too much kerb into the chicane, spinning into the barriers. The resultant pit stop for a new front wing dropped him from third down to ninth – but while the fans at home could see what was happening, the top drivers couldn’t.

Perez would have been aware that something had happened, given his mirrors were no longer full of scarlet Ferrari, but race winner Max Verstappen was none the wiser. As for Lando Norris who inherited third, he managed to pass the stricken Ferrari so was best-placed to explain what had happened when those three started dissecting the incident in the cooldown room afterwards.

“Look how flat he was, man!” was Perez’s response, while Norris was incredulous with how much kerb Leclerc – who eventually recovered to P6 – had taken. As for Verstappen, his response was pragmatic, although he couldn’t help but share a small smile with a joking Norris as he watched his main championship rival struggle...
