ROAD TO F1: Debutant Drugovich wins Austrian F2 Sprint Race from pole
Few would have expected to see Felipe Drugovich’s name around the top of the standings on his first weekend of Formula 2, but that’s exactly how it played out in Austria.
Never higher than sixth in Formula 3 last season, the MP Motorsport racer already has a win under his belt in F2, thanks to an emphatic victory in this reverse-grid (of the top-eight Feature Race finishes) Sprint Race on Sunday.
The Brazilian, who started on pole thanks to his P8 finish on Saturday, drove like a seasoned F2 contender, shrugging off the experienced challenge of Haas F1 tester driver Louis Deletraz, and overcoming not just one, but three race restarts, as the safety car got plenty of laps under its belt.
Williams junior Dan Ticktum took his first ever podium in F2, benefitting from Marcus Armstrong’s woes, with the Ferrari Academy driver handing him the position when he was forced to retire from third.
Ferrari junior Robert Shwartzman followed up P3 on Saturday with P4 in the Sprint Race, to put him second in the table behind Feature Race winner Callum Ilott, who finished out of the points.
