RACE DEBRIEF

    Mercedes hit back on Friday afternoon after Max Verstappen topped first practice for the Austrian Grand Prix, as Lewis Hamilton led a Silver Arrows one-two with the fastest lap of the day in FP2.

    The day began with Mercedes off the pace, however, as it was Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in P2 and Carlos Sainz in P3 behind leader Verstappen in FP1 – Valtteri Bottas in fourth and Hamilton down in seventh.

    But Hamilton bolted on a set of soft tyres early in FP2, before the clouds began spitting with very light rain over the Red Bull Ring, to set the benchmark in that session and go over a tenth faster than team mate Bottas.
