Max Verstappen left it late on Friday evening to seal a stunning pole position at his team’s home race at the Red Bull Ring, ahead of tomorrow’s Sprint.

As temperatures dropped and the sun started to set, and with championship rival Charles Leclerc on provisional pole, Verstappen put in barnstorming final sector to set a time of 1m 04.984s, pipping the Ferrari driver by 0.029s to take pole position. Carlos Sainz, in the other Ferrari, qualified in third, 0.082s behind Verstappen, while Sergio Perez rounded out the top four.
