George Russell mastered his getaway as the lights went out to start the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, keeping the P1 advantage he earned in the F1 Sprint, while drama ensued in the midfield pack.

As the front-runners filed through the first sequence of corners, Russell led the way from Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton, Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, and the McLaren of Lando Norris, who jumped the Ferraris on his softer tyres.

Behind, Friday pole-winner Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo came to blows; after Ricciardo’s McLaren tagged Magnussen’s Haas into a spin at Turn 6, secondary contact dramatically sent the Australian into the barriers, bringing out the Safety Car.
