Correa remains in induced coma after Spa crash

Formula 2 driver Juan Manuel Correa remains in an induced coma following the crash at Spa-Francorchamps that also claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert.

Sauber Junior driver Correa was diagnosed with fractures to both of his legs and a minor spinal injury in the aftermath of the accident. He was transferred from the circuit to the CHU Liege Hospital in Belgium, where he underwent surgery before being moved to a London-based Intensive Care Unit.

An official statement from the American-Ecuadorian driver’s media team read: “Juan Manuel remains in the Intensive Care Unit in a state of induced coma. Although his lungs have gradually recovered, his respiratory functions continue to be assisted by ECMO [Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation] and a breathing ventilator.

“Juan Manuel’s leg injuries remain an important concern and will undergo immediate surgery once his lungs are strong enough to withstand the procedure. More information will be provided when available.”

Correa, who was announced as the Alfa Romeo F1’s team’s development driver at the start of the year, has twice finished on the podium in his debut F2 season, and had tested a Formula 1 car for the first time in the week leading up to his Spa crash.
