Ex-Renault boss Abiteboul joins motorsport engineering firm Mecachrome as advisor

Cyril Abiteboul has joined motorsport engineering company Mecachrome as their motorsport advisor, five months after vacating his role as Team Principal of Renault’s Formula 1 operation.

The long-time Renault employee, who had been in sole charge of the F1 team since 2017, and with the company for around two decades, parted ways with the outfit ahead of their rebrand as Alpine, with Laurent Rossi coming in as CEO and taking control of the team.

Abiteboul begins his role with Mecachrome, who have been involved in F1 for more than 40 years with the likes of Renault, Williams and Red Bull on the engine side, with immediate effect.

They continue to be involved, as the French company manufacturer a number of parts used in the current Renault F1 power unit.

The company say his job will “be to propose strategic options for the medium-term development of the group's activities in motorsport”.

Speaking about the announcement, Mecachrome CEO Christian Cornille said: “We are proud that Cyril can provide its support and expertise to the teams of the group in this activity, which since 1983 has supported prestigious brands in the largest categories of motorsport, F1, F2, F3, endurance, rally.

“Mecachrome group have to understand the trends and opportunities of this sector and make them consistent with the Group's objectives and the transformation undertaken in its other businesses.”
