'F1 The Movie' wins Oscar in ‘Best Sound’ category

F1 The Movie has scooped an Oscar for Best Sound at the star-studded ceremony on Sunday night.

The film, which was released to critical acclaim last year, was nominated for four Academy Awards – Best Picture, Visual Effects, Best Sound and Film Editing.

The action-packed adventure, starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, picked up the Oscar for Best Sound in Hollywood, with Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo and Juan Peralta taking the honours for their work.

The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, with F1’s own Lewis Hamilton having plenty to do with the movie as a producer – and in front of camera.

Telling the story of Sonny Hayes, an experienced driver who sensationally returns to the sport to partner his rookie team mate Joshua Pearce, F1 The Movie was filmed on and around many Grand Prix weekends. Hamilton was not the only driver to have a cameo, while a fair few Team Principals got in on the action too.

Hamilton posted "Major congrats to the team," on his social media in the wake of the announcement, after admitting there was no way he could make it to the ceremony after racing in China earlier the same day.

The sven-time World Champion's feedback and experience during the production process for F1 The Movie was invaluable according to Brad Pitt, with the actor saying: “Lewis’ knowledge has been so immensely helpful. He’s been keeping us straight, going, ‘No, that doesn’t fly,’ right down to the sound.

"He can actually pick it out and go, ‘No, that’s Turn 12, not Turn 16. You need more reverb on the straight’ – he’s that specific.

“I’ve got to thank them all [in F1]. The teams have been so generous with us, so welcoming, and they play a part in this film. The drivers, F1 has opened all doors for us…

“It’s unbelievable the way they’ve let us embed into their season. We’ve tried not to get in the way and they’ve been really cool with us – I can’t thank them enough.”
