F2: Ticktum handed Monaco Sprint Race victory as Lawson is disqualified

Williams junior Dan Ticktum can now add Monaco to his list of street race successes, with the two-time Macau Grand Prix winner, and Williams junior, promoted to first in the second Formula 2 Sprint Race, following a dramatic late disqualification for on-track winner Liam Lawson.

Winning brilliantly in the wet at Monte Carlo, the Red Bull junior was later found to have breached technical regulations and stripped of the win, handing it to Ticktum, who crossed the line in second.

Drivers are required to use a defined throttle map during all formation lap starts and race starts until the car reaches 50kph. Following an investigation after the race, Lawson was found to have used a different throttle map, a breach of Technical Regulations, Article 3.6.5.

Ticktum could have taken the win on track, executing a stylish getaway to jump Juri Vips and Theo Pourchaire when the lights went out.

MONTE-CARLO, MONACO - MAY 22: Liam Lawson of New Zealand and Hitech Grand Prix (7) overtakes Oscar

Liam Lawson takes the lead from Oscar Piastri

From second - after reverse grid polesitter Marcus Armstrong failed to join the grid for the formation lap with mechanical issue - Oscar Piastri got a similarly strong start, springing off the line and ahead of Lawson. But the Alpine junior began to drop back, with both Lawson and Ticktum picking off the PREMA within a matter of laps.

Lawson proved an overtake too far for Ticktum, as he relented to a lack of grip on the slippery streets of Monte Carlo and settled for second, before Lawson’s post-race disqualification.

Championship leader Guanyu Zhou - who won Friday's first Sprint Race - gambled midway through with a switch to Super Softs, but it failed to come off and he was forced back into the pits to revert to the wets, eventually slumping to 15th. Though the Virtuosi racer does retain an 18-point lead at the top of the table, ahead of Ticktum.

Sauber academy driver Pourchaire will become the second tier’s youngest ever polesitter in the Feature Race later today at 1715 local time, the grid set by Thursday’s Qualifying session.
