F3: Slater beats Ugochukwu to victory and F3 championship lead in Budapest

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY - JULY 26: Race winner Freddie Slater of Great Britain and TRIDENT (5) celebrates

Freddie Slater and Ugo Ugochukwu put on a show in Sunday’s FIA Formula 3 Feature in Budapest, with the TRIDENT driver holding off his title rival to take the victory and championship lead going into the summer break.

The Audi Development Driver converted his P2 grid slot into a first win in Formula 3 and takes an eight point lead over his Campos Racing rival into the final two rounds.

Ugochukwu went from sixth to second, even pulling off a stunning double overtake on Brando Badoer and Mattia Colnaghi.

But despite the American’s numerous attempts, he could not get past and was forced to settle for second, and for the first time this season, he leaves a race weekend not as the championship leader.

Badoer finished third for Rodin Motorsport, while Red Bull Junior Mattia Colnaghi finished in P4 for the fourth consecutive race for MP Motorsport.

Theophile Nael finished in fifth place for Campos, with Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy member Tuukka Taponen in P6.

Ernesto Rivera was seventh ahead of DAMS Lucas Oil driver Nicola Lacorte, as PREMA Racing teammates James Wharton and Louis Sharp rounded out the top 10.

That wraps up the Budapest action for FIA Formula 3, but the drivers will be back out on track in Madrid for a two-day test on August 24-25, before Round 8 in Monza from September 4-6.
