FACTS AND STATS: Sainz comes closest yet to beating record-breaking Red Bull as Verstappen trumps Vettel

Unfortunately for Ferrari, the fairytale didn’t quite come true at Monza. But it was a special day of a different sort as we saw Max Verstappen and Red Bull make more history – and with the Scuderia pushing them all the way. Here’s just some of the numbers from the Italian Grand Prix.

  • Verstappen is the first driver in history to win 10 consecutive championship races, beating Sebastian Vettel’s record of nine straight championship race wins.

  • Red Bull are the first constructor in history to win 15 consecutive championship races (they have won 24 of last 25 races).

  • Verstappen is undefeated since April 30.

REPORT: Verstappen charges to Monza victory for record-breaking 10th successive F1 win

  • Today’s was Verstappen’s 27th win since the start of last season, tying Sir Jackie Stewart's entire career total (which was the outright F1 wins record from 1973 to 1987).

  • Red Bull finished one-two at Monza for the first time today.

  • It was Red Bull's sixth one-two finish of 2023 and their highest total in any season to date.

  • P2 for Sergio Perez was his first podium finish at Monza since he finished second in the 2012 race for Sauber.

  • Perez now has the highest points gap over third-placed Fernando Alonso that he’s had all season (Red Bull have never finished one-two in the drivers' championship).

George Russell finally found his way back into the top five

  • Carlos Sainz’s P3 for Ferrari was his first podium finish of the 2023 season.

  • Sainz finished 11.082s behind the winning Red Bull – that’s the closest any non-Red Bull driver has come to victory in a completely green flag race in 2023.

  • Sainz turned 29 years old on Friday.

  • Sainz led the first 14 laps today – the longest that any non-Red Bull driver has led a Grand Prix in 2023.

  • With Charles Leclerc coming home fourth, both Ferraris finished in the top four for the first time this season.

  • With P5 for Mercedes, George Russell took his first top-five finish since Silverstone.

  • With P6 in the sister Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton finished in the same position as at Zandvoort last weekend.

  • Hamilton has not finished on the podium at Monza in this decade.

A superb P11 for Liam Lawson in only his second Grand Prix

  • With P7, Alex Albon matched his and Williams' best result of the season (Canada).

  • Albon scored in consecutive races for the first time in his Williams career.

  • Lando Norris was P8 for McLaren and maintained his 100 per cent point-scoring record in five Monza F1 starts.

  • Fernando Alonso took P9 for Aston Martin and scored points at Monza for only the second time in the last 10 years (he previously finished eighth in 2021).

  • Valtteri Bottas finished in P10 for Alfa Romeo. He had only scored one point in the previous 12 races (10th in Canada).

  • Liam Lawson took P11 for AlphaTauri with the best result for anybody driving this particular car this season (Nyck de Vries’ best was 12th, Daniel Ricciardo’s 13th).

  • McLaren’s Oscar Piastri set the fastest lap for the first time in his career.

  • With Nico Hulkenberg in P17 and Kevin Magnussen in P18, the Haas cars were the only lapped finishers in the race.

  • AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda suffered a mechanical failure before starting the race for the second time in three visits to Monza (it previously happened to him in 2021).
