Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto have all taken grid penalties at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia this weekend after exceeding power unit components.
In the case of Red Bull’s Hadjar, who celebrated a podium last time out in Baku on his comeback from injury, he will take a seventh internal combustion engine (ICE) with four permitted throughout the current season.
Racing Bulls rookie Lindblad has also taken a new ICE – his fifth of the four allowed – while also taking a fifth turbocharger and a fifth new exhaust set.
Alpine’s Colapinto – who already carries a five-place grid penalty following his collision with team mate Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris in Azerbaijan – is set to move even further back as the Argentinian also takes a fifth ICE of the season.

As per the regulations, the first time the allocation of any power unit element is exceeded, a 10-place grid penalty will be applied, with the second time this occurs (and so on) resulting in a five-place grid drop – all penalties at the same event applying in a cumulative manner.
If a driver incurs a penalty exceeding 15 grid places, they will be required to start the race at the back of the field regardless.
Given Hadjar has already exceeded the limit with every PU component this season, he takes a five-place penalty while Lindblad will start at the back thanks to a 30-place drop. Colapinto, meanwhile, is hit with an additional 10-place drop on top of his already existing five places.
Qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia gets underway at 1600 local time on Saturday, with lights out in Sepang taking place at 1500 on Sunday.
