Hamilton and Rosberg emulate Fangio and Taruffi

Mercedes’ one-two finish in Malaysia with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was not just their first such result of the season, it was also their first one-two finish as a fully-fledged manufacturer team for over 58 years.

Back in 1955 it was Juan Manuel Fangio who led home Silver Arrows team mate Piero Taruffi in the final race of the world championship in Italy. Despite their success, Mercedes withdrew from F1 at the end of the season and did not return with a full works team until 2010.

Speaking of Lewis Hamilton, the Briton had a rather momentous weekend in Malaysia, recording pole, fastest lap, and an every-lap-led race victory for the very first time in his career. With Rosberg’s light-to-flag victory in Australia, no team other than Mercedes has led a lap in 2014.

Hamilton's pole was the 33rd of his career, drawing him level with Alain Prost and equalling Jim Clark’s record for a British driver. His win, meanwhile, was the 23rd of his career and enabled him to leapfrog another British world champion, Damon Hill, to move into 12th place on the all-time winners list.

There were other notable occurrences in Malaysia. Williams finished with both cars in the points for the first time since the 2012 United States Grand Prix, whilst Sauber ended the weekend without a classified finisher for the first time since the 2011 Italian Grand Prix.
