HIGHLIGHTS: Verstappen leads Albon and Sainz in eventful FP1 in Canada as Leclerc crashes

Max Verstappen set a blistering lap to head the field in the first practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix, edging out the Williams pair of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz at the end of the busy hour.

The grip levels around the temporary circuit were low for most of the hour, causing several drivers – from Nico Hulkenberg to Lando Norris – to narrowly avoid crashing out of the session as they struggled to stick to the typical racing line.

One competitor who did fall victim to the suboptimal conditions was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who brought out the red flags after he smacked into the barrier and damaged his car, triggering the red flags in the process, although he still ended the session in P10.

His team mate Lewis Hamilton also endured a spin but ultimately finished in fifth on the timesheets, just behind Mercedes' George Russell in P4. Isack Hadjar was sixth for Racing Bulls ahead of Lando Norris and Liam Lawson, with Pierre Gasly breaking into the top 10 with Alpine.
