McLaren driver Lando Norris set the pace during Friday’s first free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix, leading the way from Red Bull rival Max Verstappen and the Ferrari of home favourite Carlos Sainz.
Norris worked his way down to a best time of 1m 14.228s in the glorious Barcelona sunshine to finish just 0.024s clear of reigning world champion Verstappen, while four different teams filled the top four positions.
FP1: Norris heads Verstappen and Sainz in Barcelona first practice as Alonso brings out red flags
There was a brief stoppage around two thirds of the way into the session when part of Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin flew off along the back straight and landed in the middle of the track, forcing the marshals into action.
Otherwise, the main focus for the drivers was getting up to speed with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, among them Formula 2 racer Oliver Bearman in place of Nico Hulkenberg at Haas.
