Magnussen confident of being fit for Monza

Renault’s Kevin Magnussen expects to race in this coming weekend’s Italian Grand Prix after undergoing further checks on the ankle injury he sustained at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday.

Magnussen was the sole driver involved in a huge accident, which came after he lost control cresting the hill following Eau Rouge. After initial checks at the Belgian circuit’s medical centre, he was referred to a local hospital in Verviers for further routine examinations.

They confirmed a heavily bruised left ankle but no fracture or serious injury and he was released from hospital the same day. He has since undergone further checks at home in Denmark that indicate he should be able to compete in Italy, subject to a final FIA assessment on Thursday.

“I’m feeling much better, which is very good news,” said Magnussen. “I’ve had several checks that show I am fit to race in Monza and I am sure I will be in the car this weekend. We were running in the top ten in Belgium and I’m very motivated to repeat this again in Italy.”

Magnussen's team mate Jolyon Palmer went on to finish the Belgian race in 15th place.
