Maldonado handed 10-place grid penalty for engine change

Pastor Maldonado has been handed a 10-place grid penalty after using his sixth engine of the season in first practice for the 2014 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

Maldonado is the second man to earn a grid penalty under 2014 regulations that state that each driver can use no more than five of any of the six power unit components - the engine, MGU-K, MGU-H, energy store, turbocharger and control electronics - over the course of the season.

The Venezuelan will therefore drop 10 places from wherever he qualifies on Saturday. Should he qualify too far down the order for the full 10-place penalty to be applied, it will be carried over to the following race in Russia.

Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat was the first man to earn a grid drop for using a sixth engine, the Russian's penalty coming at Monza in early September.
