Montreal stats - Ricciardo becomes F1® racing's 105th winner
He has long been the owner of the biggest smile in the paddock, but now Daniel Ricciardo is also the proud owner of a Grand Prix winner’s trophy.
The Red Bull driver snatched a last-gasp victory in Canada on Sunday and in doing so became the 105th man to win a round of the FIA Formula One World Championship and the first new winner since 2012 when Pastor Maldonado won in Spain.
Ricciardo is the fourth Australian to reach the top step of the podium in F1, following in the wheel tracks of Jack Brabham, Alan Jones and Mark Webber. He also joins Gilles Villeneuve, Thierry Boutsen, Jean Alesi, Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica in an exclusive club of drivers who claimed their first career win in Montreal.
Ricciardo’s victory gave Red Bull their first victory of the season and power unit supplier Renault their first turbocharged victory since the 1986 Detroit Grand Prix when Ayrton Senna won for Lotus, and it also ended Mercedes’ six-race win streak and any hope the Silver Arrows had of completing a ‘perfect’ season.
Mercedes can at least console themselves with a seventh consecutive podium finish, whilst Nico Rosberg’s run of consecutive points finishes is now up to 16 races. Fernando Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg are the only other drivers to have scored points in every race so far this season.
Elsewhere, Felipe Massa may have ended his 200th Grand Prix weekend in the barriers, but he did at least set the fastest lap of the race - his first since the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix. The Brazilian also became the first driver other than Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton to lead a lap this season. Of course, Ricciardo also joined that club later in the race…
Finally, Max Chilton’s epic run of classified race finishes has finally come to an end. The Briton entered the weekend having finished every one of his 25 career races, but a first lap clash with Marussia team mate Jules Bianchi caused enough damage to stop him prematurely in his tracks.
