There was a slightly unexpected outcome to qualifying ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen admitting his surprise after surging to P1 just hours after a difficult outing in the Sprint.
But there was another twist to come with the 2024 world champion subsequently hit with a one-place grid drop, meaning George Russell will now start the race from pole. But we look set for an exciting race as the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were not far behind in third and fourth respectively either – the battle for the win is well and truly on.

But could some other names also be in contention for a rostrum finish at the Lusail International Circuit? Charles Leclerc – who was looking racy in the Qatar Sprint, having won out in a battle with future team mate Lewis Hamilton – could potentially be one to watch in fifth in what may well be a crucial race for Ferrari if they hope to continue the fight for the constructors’ title.
The Monegasque has Hamilton alongside him on the third row, just one week on from the seven-time world champion joining Russell on the podium in Las Vegas. Can the Silver Arrows repeat that success this weekend, or will it be advantage Red Bull, McLaren or Ferrari?
