ROAD TO F1: Mick Schumacher emulates his father with maiden F2 victory at Monza

In September 2000, Michael Schumacher took a famous victory on Italian soil at Monza to move within two points of championship leader Mika Häkkinen, in a season where he would eventually go on to win his first Formula 1 title with Ferrari. 20 years on, and his son, Mick Schumacher clinched a Formula 2 Feature Race victory on the same circuit, to move within three points of Championship leaders Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott.

It was a case of seventh time's the charm for the Ferrari junior, who had six podiums leading in to Round 8 – the most of anyone on the grid - but was yet to taste victory in 2020.

The PREMA racer owes much of his victory to a breath-taking getaway off the line, as he fired up from seventh to second before the opening corner.

The German was then aided by a disastrous pitstop for pole-sitter Callum Ilott, who had looked so assured out in front, but stalled in the pits and plummeted down the field from first. Ilott managed a sterling recovery drive, but was forced to settle for sixth place.

His P6 finish ties him in first place for the Championship lead with Robert Shwartzman, who finished in ninth place. Louis Deletraz will start from reverse grid pole in the Sprint Race on Sunday at 1110 (local time), but all eyes will be on the trio of title contenders.
