ROAD TO F1: Red Bull junior Tsunoda takes Styria F2 pole, Vesti snatches F3 pole in chaotic session

Red Bull junior Yuki Tsunoda dominated the opening day of Round 2 in Formula 2, finishing first in both free practice and qualifying for his maiden F2 pole, while F3 pole was won by Frederik Vesti in a chaotic session.
The Carlin rookie and Red Bull junior topped the timesheets for the majority of the session on Friday, surviving a late attempt from Renault Academy driver Guanyu Zhou to take first by a margin of just 0.035s.

Ferrari protégé Callum Ilott wasn’t far behind either. The championship leader qualified in third, just 0.085s off the pace.
It wasn’t quite such a successful day for fellow FDA member Mick Schumacher, who crashed out in the opening stages of free practice, before managing just 10th in qualifying.

Formula 3 qualifying was a much more manic affair. Frederik Vesti left it until the final push to steal pole from his team mate Logan Sargeant, in a stop-start session.
Sebastian Fernandez had looked on course to secure his second pole in as many rounds before crashing out midway through. PREMA’s Logan Sargeant was able to better his time on the second run, before a late red flag put everyone back into the pits with less than five minutes to go.
Sargeant was unable to get back out on track, suffering mechanical issues, and had to watch on as his team mate Vesti, and Trident’s David Beckmann both improved on his time for P1 and P2.
