Sainz cleared to race in Russia

Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz will race in the 2015 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix after passing an FIA medical test on Sunday morning. It follows his high-speed crash at the Sochi Autodrom in Saturday’s final practice session.

Sainz was airlifted to hospital for checks after burying his car under the barriers at Turn 13, but a full body scan confirmed he was unhurt and the Spaniard was discharged on Saturday evening, declaring: “My back and my neck are just a bit sore from the accident, but I’m totally ready.”

Stewards have also given Sainz permission to race despite not setting a qualifying time, and Toro Rosso have confirmed he will participate. With his rebuilt car featuring a new engine, turbocharger and gearbox, he has a 20-place grid penalty and will start from 20th and last place.
