Sainz replaces Vettel as director of Grand Prix Drivers’ Association

Carlos Sainz has been announced as a new director at the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), with the Spaniard stepping into the role vacated by former F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel.

Following Vettel’s exit from the post last year after retiring from the sport at the end of 2022, Sainz will join the GPDA alongside fellow driver George Russell, chairman Alexander Wurz and GPDA leader Anastasia Fowle.

In an announcement posted on the organisation’s Instagram page, Sainz commented: “I am passionate about my sport and think we drivers have a responsibility to do all we can to work with the stakeholders to forward the sport in many aspects.

“So I'm very happy and proud to do my part by taking on the directors' role in the GPDA.”

Wurz added of Sainz’s appointment: “We are delighted to welcome Carlos as a GPDA director. He has been an active and engaged member of the GPDA for several years and we sincerely appreciate his commitment in stepping up to this vital role."

The news was also welcomed by Russell, who commented on the post: “Welcome mate.”

The GPDA – first founded in the 1960s before being re-established in 1994 – focuses primarily on safety matters but also speaks out on other issues within the sport.

Sainz’s appointment comes as he prepares for his 11th season in Formula 1, with the campaign marking a new chapter for the 30-year-old as he enters into his first year as a Williams driver.
