'Until it's not possible, it's possible' – Brown claims McLaren still in title fight after Norris' Spanish GP pole

Zak Brown believes Lando Norris is still in contention for this year's drivers' title after claiming pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, stating "until it's not possible, it's possible".

Norris claimed pole position for Sunday's inaugural race at the Madring, but was left "shocked" at the result having nearly collided with the wall at the final corner after running slightly wide.

The result was even more surprising as Norris missed nearly all running in Friday's Free Practice 2 with a gearbox issue, before claiming top spot on Saturday.

After a sluggish start under the new-for-2026 regulations, McLaren and Norris have hit their stride this season, with the reining world champions having taken back-to-back wins in Hungary and the Netherlands.

The gap to Kimi Antonelli, who leads the drivers' standings, sits at 96 points with 10 Grands Prix remaining this season.

Max Verstappen overturned a 104-point gap to Norris' team mate Oscar Piastri last season, with McLaren team boss Brown believing such a feat could be possible again.

"It's definitely possible I think. I can only speak for McLaren, until it's not possible, it's possible," he told F1 TV post-Qualifying ahead of Sunday's 57-lap race.

"Obviously you have to be realistic but anything can happen. Today's F1 at the moment with reliability, the new power units are a little less predictable than the last generation. Anything can happen. All we can do is go for the wins every weekend and see if we can close the gap."

The inaugural race at the Madring is expected to be a tight tactical battle, with overtaking difficult on the high-speed circuit, while tyre degradation is likely to be high with hot temperatures.

Brown believes that Antonelli may have one eye on securing points in his quest for a maiden F1 title during his sophomore season, but is not expecting an easy race for victory.

"I think he wants to win, we want to win. I think Kimi is racing for a championship and Lando is racing for a championship," added Brown.

"The way he's going to get there, he's got to win. I think they'll do what they do. He'll be aggressive, it'll be interesting to see how the race plays out.

"It's been remarkably calm so far for what I think potentially can happen here with the walls.

"Difficult to pass, so we just need a clean start and then it's a long pit lane, so we'll see how strategy plays out.

"Very proud of what the team has been able to do on improving a car over the course of a weekend, because I think on Friday we wouldn't have predicted pole."
