ART’s 21-year-old driver Lewis Hamilton was already hot junior formula property before the GP2 series arrived at Istanbul Park in August 2006. But his drive at the second race in Turkey cemented his reputation as a Formula 1 world champion in waiting. As Turkey returns to the F1 calendar for the first time since 2011, we re-live a magic day for the Briton...
Hamilton started the sprint race in Turkey in seventh, but an early spin left him way down the order in P19.
It was here, though, that Hamilton showed his brilliance, carving his way steadily and intelligently through his rivals – including an aggressive Timo Glock, who’d play a key role in Hamilton becoming F1 champion two years later – to finish second, behind winner Andreas Zuber.
Re-live Hamilton’s storming drive in the video up top.
