Pole position and a new lap record went the way of Max Verstappen in Qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Max Verstappen claimed his fifth pole position of the season in a thrilling Qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix.
The Dutchman posted a 1m 18.792s, a new lap record at the Monza Circuit averaging 164.46mph – the fastest average speed lap in F1 history – which left him just 0.077s clear of Lando Norris, as the Red Bull driver made use of a lower downforce configuration than that used by McLaren.
The four-time World Champion also bested the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri and Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, the top five covered by just over three-tenths.
