Max Verstappen was the class of the field during qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix as the reigning world champion charged to pole position in his Red Bull.
At the end of a dry grid-deciding hour, Verstappen produced a time of 1m 28.197s to edge out team mate Sergio Perez for the top spot, meaning he will start on pole at Suzuka for the third successive season.
Lando Noris will line up in third position for McLaren, followed by Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, with just under half a second covering the top five drivers.
