WATCH: Sargeant crash brings out red flags during FP1 in Suzuka

Logan Sargeant brought out the red flags after a heavy crash in first practice for the Japanese Grand Prix, with Williams later confirming that his chassis was ok.

The team had been forced to withdraw the American from the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago after his team mate Alex Albon damaged a chassis with a crash of his own during FP1 in Melbourne. With a spare chassis unavailable to the team, the decision was made to withdraw Sargeant and allow Albon to compete in his car for the remainder of that weekend.

With the American looking to impress in Suzuka after that bitter disappointment, he got off to a nightmare start after taking over the repaired chassis for this weekend.

At around the halfway point, the first practice session was brought to a halt after Sargeant went wide on a hot lap, before ending up on the grass and losing control. He would then spin through the gravel and hit the barriers at Turn 7. Thankfully he was straight on the radio to confirm he was okay.

While the chassis was later confirmed to be fine, the team did add that there was extensive damage to the front suspension as well as the gearbox as they bid to get the car fixed for FP2. Click on the video player above to watch the incident unfold.
