Every Formula 1 driver has one overriding goal whenever they step into the cockpit of their car before the start of a Grand Prix: to be the first to see the chequered flag waving at the end of the race.
The one flag no driver wants to see is the black flag – the flag that means 'come into the pits now, your race is over'. Disqualification.
With such talented drivers and the highly professional teams on the pitwall running things, it doesn't happen often in Formula 1 – but it does happen. Hit play in the video above to see some of the most infamous black flag moments in F1, including Ayrton Senna being shown it at his home race in Brazil, Juan Pablo Montoya getting the treatment in 2004, and of course Michael Schumacher's controversial black flag incident at Silverstone in 1994.
