Paddock Postcard from Hockenheim 30 Jul 2006

Leo Sayer might not be able to stop dancing, but it looks like he’s got the Formula One bug back again as he made his second visit of the season after coming over from Sydney to Germany on business.

Elsewhere Christian Rach, Germany’s answer to British chef Gordon Ramsey, staged a cook-off in the Mini Paddock Lounge, at a banquet featuring German celebrities such as Thomas Heinze (Germany’s Daniel Craig), Charlotte Engelhardt (Playboy covergirl and TV presenter), and Axel Stein (comedian). The most popular figure in the paddock on Saturday, however, was that of Miss Germany, who was ensconced at Williams.

In Saturday’s GP2 race Lewis Hamilton got his championship campaign back on track after disappointments at Magny-Cours with a strong second place in the wheeltracks of Gianmaria Bruni. Timo Glock was third ahead of Ernesto Viso, but there was heartache for title contender Nelson Piquet Jnr. Both he and Glock were awarded drive-through penalties for pit-lane speeding; Piquet set a series of fastest laps as he fought back up to fourth place, only for his car to roll to a halt on the final lap within sight of the finish line. Hamilton now leads Piquet by 22 points with seven races to go.
