Jean-Jacques His, the Renault Formula One team's director of engine development, is to leave the squad at the end of May, it was announced on Tuesday.

His, who has decided on a career change, made a vital contribution to the six world championship titles won by Renault between 1992 and 1997, after which the team withdrew from the sport. He again made his expertise available when Renault returned to Formula One in 2000 and has helped to lead them to their current third place in the 2003 constructors' standings.

The 56-year-old engineer joined Renault in 1973 and in 1984 was appointed head of engine development at Renault Sport. From then on, his career was closely linked to motor sport and Renault's success in Formula 1, apart from a brief period as head of Ferrari's racing engine department between 1986 and 1988.
