Extreme-weather tyres ready for Austria 15 May 2003
Both Bridgestone and Michelin have confirmed that they will be supplying their teams with additional 'extreme-weather' tyres for this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix and for the remainder of the season.
The move follows a request from the FIA that the suppliers provide a compound capable of functioning in exceptionally wet conditions, as experienced during last month's Brazilian Grand Prix weekend.
"The FIA has provided us with guidelines for these tyres and it is understood that they will not be used unless the race director has specifically informed all teams via the timing monitors that the weather conditions necessitate their use," explained Bridgestone's Technical Manager, Hisao Suganuma.
Both Bridgestone and Michelin took only shallow grooved 'intermediate' tyres to Brazil, under the terms of an agreement to limit the number of types of tyre taken to each Grand Prix. The race at Interlagos was subsequently started behind the safety car due to the unexpectedly wet conditions.
