Renault's 2004 challenger, the R24, will make its track debut at Barcelona next week, the team has announced. Jarno Trulli will sample the new car on Tuesday January 20, before handing over to team mate Fernando Alonso later in the week.

The R24 will not be officially launched until January 29 in Sicily, but with the first chassis and the car's RS24 V10 ready to go, the team do not want to miss out on any valuable testing time.

"We completed the build of R24-01 late yesterday (Monday) afternoon, and fired up the engine as well," confirmed Renault technical director Bob Bell. "No problems were reported, and we are very pleased with the results. The 'birth' went very smoothly, and the process was a credit to everybody at Enstone and Viry. This is only the beginning though. The next stage will be to get the car to Barcelona, and start confirming its performance potential on the track."

Assembly of the second R24 chassis will begin at Renault's Enstone plant on Wednesday.
