BAR’s Anthony Davidson topped the times at Monza on Wednesday as a three-day test got underway ahead of the forthcoming Canadian and United States Grands Prix.

Having chosen not to run at Silverstone because of the adverse weather conditions, BAR instead focussed their attentions on the Italian circuit, with test drivers Davidson and Enrique Bernoldi.

After establishing a good set-up on the 007, Davidson then carried out an aerodynamics programme for the team, running 112 laps on his way to the day’s best time of 1m 21.887s. Bernoldi, doing tyre as well as aero work, was fourth fastest after 127 laps.

Marc Gene was Ferrari’s sole representative, in second place, the Spaniard running 127 laps of an aero and Bridgestone tyre programme. Just behind him was the Toyota of Jarno Trulli. The Italian is due to switch to the Silverstone session on Thursday.

Completing Wednesday’s Monza line-up was Jacques Villeneuve for Sauber. The French-Canadian, who will hand over to team mate Felipe Massa on Thursday, clocked up 95 laps in the C24 on his way to the fifth and final time.

"The focus of the test this week will be the preparation for the next two races in North America,” explained Jacky Eeckelaert, Sauber’s chief race engineer. “In Montreal and Indianapolis it will be the first time this season that we run with aerodynamic packages for medium downforce levels.

“Therefore, we will evaluate several new parts, mainly front and rear wings. Some of them we tested to a certain extent already in Le Castellet three weeks ago and need to verify them here in Monza, but we will also have completely new parts on the car. In the morning Jacques did a comparison of the new package and later in the afternoon he worked with Michelin on the tyre selection for Montreal.”

Testing continues at Monza until Friday.
