Jordan have announced they will be testing their EJ15B machine for the first time in Barcelona later this week. Race drivers Tiago Monteiro and Narain Karthikeyan will be at the Circuit de Catalunya to sample the car on Thursday and Friday.

The Toyota-powered EJ15B is a development of the current EJ15, which took the team to third and fourth places in last weekend’s six-car race at the US Grand Prix in Indianapolis.

Jordan's sporting director Adrian Burgess hopes the car will be a major step forward on its predecessor, which has found itself out-paced by Minardi on occasions this year.

“Until we conduct our initial track test at Barcelona on Thursday and Friday, it is hard to say exactly how much of an improvement the new EJ15B will be,” he said. “The results are a long study of the problems we have with the current car,” he added. “We have addressed as many points and issues as we could without designing a completely new car. This is an updated version.

“We think we have made substantial gains in terms of downforce and drag reduction. The car should be far more efficient than the previous model and it certainly looks a step closer to the opposition. If it performs as well as it looks, hopefully we will be looking forward to challenging the Red Bull and Sauber cars and being further ahead of Minardi.”

Jordan, who are set to be renamed Midland in 2006, closed to within a point of Sauber in the constructors’ standings thanks to the unusual result at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
