Winkelhock first up for Midland 02 Mar 2006
Midland have confirmed that Markus Winklehock will serve as the teams third and reserve driver for the opening round of the 2006 FIA Formula One World Championship in Bahrain. Fellow tester Giorgio Mondini will be on duty for the following race in Malaysia.
"We are fortunate to have two such promising young drivers testing for us," commented the team's Managing Director Colin Kolles. "They are both very talented and capable of providing useful feedback. I'm sure they will help us develop the car to its maximum potential in preparation for the opening races."
Winkelhock finished third in the Formula Renault World Series last season. The 25-year-old German is the son of former Grand Prix driver Manfred. Swiss hopeful Mondini, also 25, was the Formula Renault V6 Champion in 2004.
The pair will share the Midland third driver role throughout the season, along with another German member of the teams testing squad, Adrian Sutil.
