So near, yet so far for Davidson 25 Aug 2007
Super Aguris Anthony Davidson was celebrating in Istanbul on Saturday after his best qualifying performance since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. As in Melbourne, Davidson will start Sundays race from 11th on the grid after almost making it through to Q3.
The Englishman made an instant impression in Q1 with his time of 1m 28.304s, which put him an impressive eighth fastest and comfortably secured him entry to the second qualifying phase. A stunning Q2 lap saw him improve by over three-tenths, but in the end it wasnt quite enough and Renaults Giancarlo Fisichella edged him for the final Q3 spot.
The day started off well, explained Davidson. After free practice this morning we were looking pretty strong to challenge for Q2 in qualifying, and we got through reasonably easily.
"Before the session I was a bit sceptical as to whether we could get through or not, but the guys worked hard and everyone did a great job and we did it in the end, even challenging for Q3! It was a really good day, and I am going to remember that lap for a very long time.
Davidsons impressive pace contrasted sharply with that of Takuma Sato in the second SA07. Sato, who has scored all of the Japanese teams four points this season, qualified down in 19th after struggling with a lack of grip in his SA07.
