Alonso trains with Tour de France winner Sastre 22 Jan 2009
Renaults Fernando Alonso swapped four wheels for two earlier this week when he took part in an intense training session with the 2008 Tour de France winner, fellow Spaniard Carlos Sastre.
Alonso spent four hours cycling with Sastre and the rest of his Cervelo team in Vila Nova de Cacela, Portugal, just over 100 kilometres from Portimao where Renault are testing their new R29 car this week.
In all truth, I was surprised by his level of fitness and how strong he is on the bike, said Sastre of Alonso on his official website. It has been a really enjoyable meeting.
We made the most of the time to get to know each other a little more. My team mates were really happy to meet Alonso face-to-face and Fernando was delighted to spend a training day with them.
Alonso, a keen cycling fan, and Sastre, an equally passionate follower of motorsport, met during a recent charity football match in Madrid. They are expected to meet again when Alonso plays host to Sastre at Formula One testing on Thursday.
