Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has requested information from Ferrari as well as Mercedes as it looks into the latter’s alleged rule contravention in participating in a Pirelli tyre test using a 2013 car.

Both Ferrari and Red Bull lodged a protest against Mercedes at last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix after news emerged of the 1,000-kilometre test, carried out in the week following the preceding Spanish round.

Ferrari also assisted Pirelli with a tyre test earlier in the season, though with a 2011 car. Except for the annual young driver test and a limited number of straight-line sessions, in-season testing using a current car is prohibited under the 2013 Formula One sporting regulations.

“The FIA has asked Team Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 and Scuderia Ferrari Team which have taken part in tyre tests in the 2013 season to reply to a disciplinary inquiry in pursuance of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules,” read a statement released by the FIA on Friday evening.

“This follows the Stewards' Report from the Monaco Grand Prix and represents supplementary information required by the FIA in the light of the replies received from Pirelli, who were asked for clarifications on Tuesday May 28th.”

The FIA is in the process of considering whether to bring the matter before the International Tribunal.

Earlier on Friday Pirelli put out a lengthy press release in which they stated that they never asked to use a current car for the tests and that the use of a 2013 Mercedes was discussed directly by the team and the FIA. Mercedes have issued no official comment.
