Sebastian Vettel may have scored his seventh pole position of the season on Saturday, but the German knows he has a race on his hands to win a sixth successive race on Sunday. After qualifying the Red Bull driver discussed where his main threat might come from…

Q: Sebastian, another pole position, and a substantial gap to the guy behind you on the grid. Against whom are you driving tomorrow?
Sebastian Vettel:
Against everybody. It’s a long race and get it a bit wrong with the strategy and there you go. True, in qualifying trim we’ve been very fast - no question about that. The gap is surprising - and not starting from pole position would have been indeed a disappointment - but it is also a fact that so far no points have been allocated this weekend, so it’s full concentration for tomorrow.

Q: What will be the decisive factor in the race?
SV:
Strategy. I think to get the strategy right with the tyres will be crucial. We have seen today that some have already tried to do things differently in qualifying - probably that is why there are some huge gaps. So my prediction is that it will be a sizzling and turbulent race.

Q: From the top ten this afternoon, four drivers opted for the harder tyres and six for the softer tyres. What made you opt for the softer tyres?
SV:
We discussed that internally and I opted for the softer and Mark for the harder tyres. Of course it will all depend how far you can go with the softs and what the situation is with the traffic - but I had a better feeling starting on the softs. If it’s a good idea to follow that feeling, well, that is written in the stars!

Q: Is it such a huge advantage to start from the first row on the soft tyres?
SV:
I hope so. And if the result is good tomorrow we know that we’ve been right with our decision.

Q: With that huge gap to the rest behind you, isn’t the race and the title already sewn up?
SV:
How does the saying go: don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched. That is me. I do one step at a time and don’t let myself get distracted when others are already five steps ahead. First there is a race tomorrow - and of course I would love to win it. Everything else is not on my immediate radar.

Q: You’ve won here the previous two races and it looks possible for another Vettel win tomorrow. Is this a track that is especially to your liking?
SV:
The car has been great all year long, so this here doesn’t come as a huge surprise. If you are able to do with your car what you want - and the car follows you - then you probably are able to squeeze out a better time. Hopefully that goes for the whole race distance. And yes, I like the track here.

Q: You cooled the brakes when you parked your car - that was a rather unusual sight…
SV:
I was out on my second try in Q3 when we realized that my time will do and I aborted the run - but of course the brakes where still hot so I wanted to do something nice to my car. (laughs)
