Alfa Romeo to replace Technical Director Resta with Head of Aero
Alfa Romeo will promote their Head of Aerodynamics Jan Monchaux to the role of Technical Director when current Simone Resta leaves at the end of July.
It’s a quick turnaround for ex-Ferrari F1 Chief Designer Resta, who left the Scuderia in June 2018 to become Alfa Romeo’s Technical Director.
Team Principal Frederic Vasseur thanked Resta (pictured below) for “his contribution to the progression of the team, which sits sixth in the constructors' standings after the British Grand Prix.
“I wish him all the best for his future appointments,” said Vasseur. “As for Jan, I am delighted to have him step up to the role of Technical Director. He has done a brilliant job so far and I am confident he will be able to lead our technical group as the team continues its upward journey.”
It's not yet confirmed where Resta will be heading, but it's expected he will return to Ferrari, with the Scuderia's Team Principal Mattia Binotto saying in May that he was "evaluating" a return for Alfa's outgoing technical boss.
Monchaux, who began his motorsport career at Toyota in 2002 before moving to Ferrari in 2010, became Sauber F1 Team’s Head of Aerodynamics in 2018. The Hinwil-based team was entered as Alfa Romeo Racing for 2019, of course.

“I am very excited about this new challenge,” said Monchaux, “and I am looking forward to starting in my new position. The owners, board and Team Principal are sending a simple but strong message to the whole company – they value continuity and believe in the existing team and the work we have been doing. It is now up to us to prove them right, but I am convinced our future is bright.”
Alfa Romeo’s new Technical Director will therefore start on August 1 – just in time for the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
