The first qualifying session at the newly remodeled Circuit Zandvoort proved to be a thriller, with two red flag periods in Q2 alone and plenty of shocks up and down the field. While Max Verstappen delighted the home crowd with yet another pole, his team mate couldn’t even make it out of Q1. Here are some of the fascinating stats and facts thrown up from qualifying for the Dutch GP…

• This was Max Verstappen’s sixth pole in the last seven races.

• Verstappen is sharing the front row with Lewis Hamilton for the sixth time this season – and the first time since that opening lap collision at Silverstone.

• Valtteri Bottas starts from P3 for the sixth time this season, with only two front row starts in 2021.

Verstappen sent the fans wild with his sixth pole in seven races

• While Hamilton’s record against Bottas is at 10-3.

• Pierre Gasly matched his previous best qualifying of the year with another fourth on the grid – the previous one achieved in Baku, where he finished on the podium.

• Charles Leclerc grabbed fifth on the grid having led the way in both FP2 yesterday and Q1.

• Carlos Sainz has his best qualifying since Paul Ricard six races ago with P6.

• Antonio Giovinazzi has tied his career-best qualifying from the 2019 Austrian GP with seventh.

• Esteban Ocon leads the qualifying head to head against Fernando Alonso by 7-6, with only 0.023s separating them in Zandvoort.

Giovinazzi matched his career-best qualifying result at Zandvoort

• Daniel Ricciardo out-qualifies Lando Norris for the second straight race.

• Norris fails to reach Q3 for the first time this season.

• Nicholas Latifi reached Q2 for consecutive race weekends for the first time in his F1 career.

• Sebastian Vettel found himself out in Q1 for the first time since Bahrain.

• While Sergio Perez’s Q1 elimination was his first since the 2020 Styrian GP.

• Robert Kubica’s P18 matches his best Q1 performance of the entire 2019 season with Williams.
