F1 DRIVER CONTRACTS: From Max Verstappen to Lewis Hamilton – how long do their current deals last?

After a host of driver moves over the winter, the grid is set for 2023 – but what are the durations of the deals currently in place up and down the grid? Here, we present them all in one place…
Red Bull
Max Verstappen / 2028
Max Verstappen currently boasts the longest contract on the F1 grid, having put pen to paper on a bumper new deal early last year – keeping him with the Milton Keynes team through 2028. That means the Dutchman, all things going to plan, will be staying put for at least the next six seasons.
Sergio Perez / 2024
On the other side of the Red Bull garage, Sergio Perez has two years left on his contract, after Red Bull rewarded him for an upturn in form with a multi-year extension in the summer of last year.

Ferrari
Charles Leclerc / 2024
Charles Leclerc impressed Ferrari so much during his first season with the team in 2019 that they promptly tied him down to a five-year contract, which still has two years remaining.
Carlos Sainz / 2024
Leclerc’s team mate, Carlos Sainz, is also signed through 2024 after he brushed off some early-2022 incidents to bag his first pole positions and race win, and earn a new multi-year deal.
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton / 2023
Lewis Hamilton’s contractual situation has already made plenty of headlines over the winter, as the seven-time world champion heads into the final year of an agreement he signed in 2021. But the Briton and Mercedes have both indicated that they are close to agreeing terms on a new deal.
Verstappen and Red Bull have committed to each other through the 2028 season
George Russell / ‘Multi-year’
The exact length of George Russell’s deal with Mercedes was not specified when he stepped up from Williams for the 2022 season, but it is a long-term arrangement, and one that has no doubt been reinforced by his strong displays alongside the experienced Hamilton so far.
Alpine
Esteban Ocon / 2024
Shortly before his breakthrough F1 win with the team at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon signed a new three-year contract – keeping him aboard until at least the end of 2024.

Pierre Gasly / ‘Multi-year’
Pierre Gasly’s move to Alpine was also made without confirmation of his contract length, but it is understood to run through 2024 – thus tying in with new team mate and fellow Frenchman Ocon.
McLaren
Lando Norris / 2025
Lando Norris is another driver with several years left on his current contract, following a series of renewals with McLaren in recent years. As it stands, he will be at Woking until the end of 2025.
Oscar Piastri / 2024
After a tug of war between McLaren and Alpine last summer, Oscar Piastri will make his F1 debut in papaya orange in 2023 – with the young Australian also signed up for 2024.
Norris is another driver with a long-term deal, having signed for McLaren until the end of 2025
Alfa Romeo
Valtteri Bottas / ‘Multi-year’
Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas is also on an unspecified multi-year deal, which he began in 2022, having moved over to the Sauber-run team after a lengthy stint at Mercedes.
Zhou Guanyu / 2023
Following an encouraging debut F1 season alongside Bottas, which included points in his first race, Alfa Romeo opted to renew Zhou Guanyu’s contract for the upcoming campaign.
Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso / ‘Multi-year’
Fernando Alonso kicked off the F1 ‘silly season’ last summer after announcing a surprise move from Alpine to Aston Martin, with his multi-year deal set to run until at least the end of 2024.
Lance Stroll / Unknown
Alonso has joined Lance Stroll – son of team owner Lawrence – at Aston Martin, with the developing Canadian likely to stay onboard while his father is at the reins.
Haas
Kevin Magnussen / ‘Multi-year’
Kevin Magnussen made a shock return to F1 with Haas in 2022, replacing the ousted Nikita Mazepin pre-season, and his initial deal runs until at least the end of the 2023 season.
Alonso sparked plenty of movement in the driver market after signing for Aston Martin
Nico Hulkenberg / 2023
Nico Hulkenberg is another F1 returnee with Haas as he slots back into a full-time seat for 2023 – the German’s deal understood to feature options on both his and the team’s side.
AlphaTauri
Yuki Tsunoda / 2023
Yuki Tsunoda stepped up to F1 with AlphaTauri in 2021, earning extensions for 2022 and 2023, when he will become the team’s most experienced driver after Gasly’s move to Alpine.
Nyck de Vries / ‘Multi-year’
Nyck de Vries joins AlphaTauri after impressing as a stand-in for Williams at last year’s Italian Grand Prix – his Red Bull deal understood to be multi-year, running until at least the end of 2023.
Williams
Alex Albon / ‘Multi-year’
Another multi-year man, Alex Albon is set to be with Williams through 2024, having returned to F1 with the Grove outfit in 2022 after losing his Red Bull drive and spending a year on the sidelines.
Logan Sargeant / 2023
Logan Sargeant is the other rookie on this year’s F1 grid, stepping up to the top echelon after finishing fourth in the 2022 F2 standings, and holding a one-year contract.
